BOOK REVIEW: Pipe Dreams by Destiny Allison

Hi everyone! Here's my review of a page-turning dystopian sci-fi novel I read the other night. You should check it out.

PIPE DREAMS by Destiny Allison

Let me get straight to the point here: Destiny Allison is a fantastic writer. She's so good that boring movies should be narrated by her writing -- and maybe then, I might have a chance at staying awake during The Tree of Life.

So what's it about?
It's about a bunch of dudes who try to create a slave race by genetically re-engineering the human race by releasing an airborne virus. It actually isn't as sci-fi-ish as it sounds, it's more of a race against time adventure like 24.

The villains in this book are nasty. There's this one guy named Lewis who is a disgustingly vile human being. And you know what? He's so vile that it actually became quite a lot of fun to read and I started rooting for him -- which leads me to a letdown of this book: it's main character, Vanessa Kovalic.

Obviously every reader will respond differently, but I didn't much care for her. She doesn't really do much. She just stands around and mopes.

War of the Worlds would've been a much better movie if Tom Cruise and his kids got zapped to bits! Actually, any annoying characters in any movie must die. That should be the new rule of cinema.
Like in Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds -- Tom Cruise's family in it is so fucking annoying and unlikeable that I was praying for the aliens to zap his whole family from the face of the planet (especially his whining son). When you watch a movie, the last thing you want to see is a teenage son being all angst-y and whiny. It's unbearable.

Alright, getting back to this book. The writing is truly first-rate. It pulls you into its world and drags you along for the ride with its diverse cast of characters. It's all very captivating. Even when the story sometimes doesn't feel that exciting, you can't help but just keep turning the pages because of how well written it is.

I'm looking forward to the sequel and reading more from Destiny Allison. :)
